BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah announced on Sunday that it had launched a barrage of artillery shells and guided missiles at Israeli positions in a disputed border area known as the Lebanese Shebaa farms. The attack was described as an act of “solidarity” with the large-scale air, sea, and land assault conducted by the Palestinian group Hamas on Israel, which began on Saturday.

Hezbollah’s statement read, “The Islamic resistance (Hezbollah)… attacked three positions of the Zionist enemy in the occupied Lebanese Shebaa farms… with large numbers of artillery shells and guided missiles.”

In response to the attack from Lebanon, the Israeli army confirmed that it had also fired artillery towards southern Lebanon on Sunday. The Israeli statement indicated, “Israeli artillery is in the process of striking the area of Lebanon from which a shot was fired,” without providing further details about the nature of the counterattack.

The exchange of artillery fire between Hezbollah and Israel comes amid heightened tensions in the region following Hamas’ offensive against Israel. The situation underscores the broader regional implications of the conflict, with Hezbollah showing its support for Hamas in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian factions.
