BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement said it downed an Israeli drone in southern Lebanon near the border on Monday.
Hezbollah said that the Israeli drone entered Lebanese airspace near Zibqin in the south.
The Israeli military said that one of its drones fell in Lebanese territory during routine operation. There is no risk of a breach of information, AFP reported.
Israeli drones and warplanes regularly violate Lebanon’s airspace, while Hezbollah has been sending drones towards the Jew state for years.
Both sides claim to have shot down the others’ drones in the past.
Israel shot down drone in April
In April, Israel’s army said soldiers had shot down a drone that came in its airspace from Lebanon, a day after a barrage of missiles was fired into Israel.
The neighbouring countries are still technically involved in war, and peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force (UNIF) in Lebanon patrol the border between the nations.
Established in 1978, UNIFIL was beefed up after a destructive war in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah.
The movement is the only side not to have disarmed following Lebanon’s 1975-1990 civil war, and it is also a mighty player in Lebanese politics.
