HEC Asks Universities to Implement Revised Teacher Education Roadmap

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has asked the heads of all private and public sector universities and degree-awarding institutes in the discipline of Education to implement the revised Teacher Education Roadmap.

The HEC has issued letters to the heads of all private and public sector universities and degree-awarding institutes in this regard with the recommendations of the National Curriculum Review Committee.

According to the revised Teacher Education Roadmap, Associate Degrees in Education (ADE) candidates will be allowed to enroll in the 5th or 3rd year of a four-year B.Ed. programme, the HEC stated in the letters. 

Similarly, candidates with an associate degree other than Education or two-year erstwhile BA or BSc degrees (now obsolete) shall be admitted in the third year of a four-year B.Ed. 5th semester or Programme through a bridging semester after completing the deficiency courses of 15 to 18 credit hours as determined by the admitting university.

Moreover, BS Education, M.Ed., and MA Education shall be considered equivalent to B.Ed. (Hons) or B.Ed. 4 years, B.Ed. 1.5 after 16 years of qualification, B.Ed. 2.5 after 14 years of qualification for employment and Further Education. The graduates have sixteen years or equivalent qualification in disciplines other than Education and are desirous of acquiring a B.Ed. Degrees will be allowed enrolment in 1.5 B.Ed. consisting of 45 to 54 credit hours of coursework.

However, graduates with 16 years of non-relevant qualifications desirous of acquiring admission to MS/M. Phil Education shall be required to complete remaining courses of a minimum of 18 credit hours as part of the degree program as determined by the university of admission on a case-to-case basis. Lastly, the terminology for Teacher Education Degrees from fall 2023 shall only be ‘Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)’ onwards. The strands, such as elementary, Early Childhood Education, Secondary Education, etc., and specializations like academic planning, curriculum, assessment, leadership, guidance & counseling, etc., shall only be reflected on transcripts and not degrees.
