Heavy Torrential Rains Kill Seven in KP

PESHAWAR: Heavy torrential rains killed seven people in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and injured dozens on Saturday.

A Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) report claimed that heavy rains in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa killed four people and injured one in Lower Chitral.

A spokesman of the Relief Department said that the KP Relief Department, PDMA, Rescue 1122, District Administration, Civil Defence, and other concerned departments were on high alert.

He stated that affected residents of Lower Chitral had already been relocated to safer locations and that a thorough evaluation of the damage would begin as soon as the flood waters in the area subsided. According to the official, food items (dry ration) were given to affected families. The spokesperson stated that the victims had already received the relief supplies.

Separately, in the district of Mansehra, rains killed at least three people, and many others got injured in wall and roof collapse incidents.

Two people, including a woman and a kid, died when the roof and walls of a house collapsed. Rescue 1122 Mansehra rescued and transported five injured people to the hospital.

According to sources with Rescue 1122, the first roof collapse incident happened on Chinar Road. A makeshift Afghan family’s house collapsed, and the woman inside died. A child was rescued and taken to the hospital.

On Bedra Road, a wall of Qadeer’s mud house collapsed due to heavy rain on a family as they were sleeping. Husnain, a 9-year-old boy who was critically injured in this incident and taken to the hospital, later lost his life to injuries. The other four family members rescued from the wreckage and transported to the hospital by Rescue 1122 had minor injuries.

Along with the fatalities and injuries, the district of Mansehra was devastated by the torrential rains, where from last night to today at noon, most of the city was submerged by flash floods, and residents were trapped inside their homes.

People have to face damages amounting to millions of rupees in numerous city regions where residential and commercial buildings were also damaged by flooding.

According to the meteorological authority, the Hazara division is expected to have additional severe rainfall from July 22 to July 26. —APP
