WASHINGTON: A powerful winter storm has struck multiple northern US states, bringing heavy snowfall, freezing rain, hazardous travel conditions and forcing school closures.

The storm has caused heavy snowfall, freezing rain, and dangerous travel conditions, leading local authorities to prioritise safety over regular school functions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings, predicting more snow.  The Midwest is experiencing one of its most intense snowstorms of the winter season, especially in Chicago, where blizzard-like conditions have made travel risky.

Due to the harsh weather, Chicago Public Schools and surrounding districts have cancelled classes or shifted to online learning. Many schools in Indiana and Michigan have closed due to heavy snow and poor visibility.

In the Mid-Atlantic region, including Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia, the storm has caused dangerous icy conditions, resulting in road accidents, power breakdowns, and transportation disruptions.

A number of schools in the districts of Virginia and West Virginia have shut down due to worsening conditions.

In the Northeast of the US, states including New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania are experiencing heavy snowfall.

Dozens of schools in the districts of Connecticut and New Jersey have closed while emergency responders are working to prevent traffic pileups and icy road accidents.

The National Weather Service is monitoring the storm’s path and intensity, warning that additional snowfall and icy conditions could persist in some areas.

Parents and guardians are requested to stay updated through, school announcements, local news stations, and emergency weather alerts.

As road conditions continue to deteriorate, authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel and adhere to local safety guidelines. Many school districts are preparing for the possibility of extended closures if conditions remain harsh.

With winter storms affecting millions of students and families, schools in the impacted areas are prioritising safety, ensuring that students and staff stay out of harm’s way.
