ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecast widespread rain, wind, and thundershowers in several areas of northern Punjab and Kashmir from early Wednesday, as monsoon and westerly systems continue to intensify across the country.

The disaster management authority in its forecast on Tuesday said that westerly and monsoon systems are penetrating Pakistan right now.

“Expect heavy rains in Muzzafarabad, Islamabad, Chakwal, and north and central Punjab at midnight 22/23 July,2025,” said the forecast.

The NDMA advised the people living in low-lying areas to stay away from flooded roads and underpasses.

People are asked to ensure proper drainage and do not throw any garbage into drains.

Citizens were also asked to stay away from power poles and unsafe infrastructure due to the chance of electrocution.

The public, travellers, and tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary exposure to vulnerable areas, stay alert, and remain updated on the latest weather conditions to prevent any untoward situation.

GLOF alert

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) alert in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan in the current week.

It said that during the period, scattered rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy falls, are expected in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“The prevailing weather conditions increase the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, and landslide events in vulnerable glaciated regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” it said.

All concerned are advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.

The Met Office has also warned of urban flooding in Rawalpindi and Gujranwala on 22–23 July, with scattered to widespread rains and isolated heavy to very heavy showers expected in Islamabad and Rawalpindi during the next 24 hours.

Regarding river flows, the PMD said low to medium-level flows are likely in the Chenab and Jhelum rivers, as well as in the associated nullahs of the Ravi and Chenab systems, from 22–23 July. Continuous heavy rainfall has also led to a significant rise in reservoir levels.

Countrywide, monsoon rains since June 26 have resulted in 242 deaths and 598 injuries, according to the NDMA’s website. Of these, 13 deaths occurred in the past 24 hours.

Most fatalities — 135 — were reported in Punjab, followed by 56 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 24 in Sindh, 16 in Balochistan, two in Azad Kashmir, and one in Islamabad.
