MANILA: Officials said on Thursday that as many as 32 people have died due to recent heavy rains and floods in several parts of the Philippines.
According to the National Disaster and Management Council, 23 deaths were reported in the southern Philippines, six in Bicol, and three in the central parts of the country.
It said that 24 people were still missing while 11 others were wounded.
Heavy rains in the Philippines
It warned that flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected in several parts of the country.
Reports said that the recent floods have affected more than 486,000 people in ten regions of the Philippines. The floods also destroyed many houses and standing crops in the country.
Roads, bridges, and infrastructure were also damaged by the heavy rains and floods in the Philippines. Reports said that many people are still staying in temporary shelters.
The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries worldwide due to its location in the Pacific typhoon belt and Pacific Ring of Fire. On average, the country experiences twenty typhoons annually, some of which are intense and destructive.
