MAZAR-I-SHARIF: Rainstorms and flash floods destroyed houses and farmlands in northern Afghanistan, a police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri said on Friday.
He told reporters that heavy downpours triggered devastative floods on Thursday evening, partially damaging or badly destroying over 300 houses and 3,000 acres of farmlands in District Zari district of the Balkh province and its vicinity.
The floods also killed numerous cattle in the area, the official said. However, there were no reports of casualties. Rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas to assist the affected families.
The floods also cut off the link between Qalat, the Zabul province’s capital, to 7 districts in the country’s southern region.
More rains expected
The Meteorological Department of Afghanistan has reportedly predicted more rains and floods in twenty of the country’s thirty-four provinces in the coming days.
