Heavy Rain Kills 31 in Brazil

SAO PAULO: The death toll from heavy rain and flash floods in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state has risen to 31, western media reported on Wednesday.

Local authorities said that strong cyclone thrashed the region, flood homes and increased water level rivers to the dangerous level.

Town of Mucum has been completely submerged by rising water, while streets and rivers were also flooded. Cities of Lajeado and Roca Sales have also been affected badly. Recently floods hit Rio Grande do Sul.

Last year over 50 people were killed in Sao Paulo state after heavy rain that caused landslides and flooding.

City of Petropolis near Rio de Janeiro and Bahia have also affected by the similar disasters recently.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has spoken to Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite to offer government’s full to handle the worsening situation.

According to the weather experts another strong spell is going to start in Rio Grande do Sul in next 24 hours putting the state on high alert.

Expert Climatempo in a statement said more rain is expected in Rio Grande do Sul as combination of lower air pressure and warm humid air will again form heavy clouds over the area.

About 10.9 million people live in Rio Grande do Sul state which has several industries. It borders Uruguay and Argentina and top grain-producing states in the country.
