ISLAMABAD: It’s only early April, and north India and parts of Pakistan are reeling under extreme heat.
India’s weather department has warned of high temperatures in parts of northern India, including the capital Delhi, for this week.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said northern and central states – including Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat – can expect maximum temperatures to cross 40C.
According to BBC, it has issued a yellow alert, which means that the heat is tolerable for the general public but can cause moderate health concerns for infants, the elderly and people with chronic diseases.
Citizens endured another scorching day on Saturday as temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius in Karachi and other parts of the Sindh province, driven by a ‘heat-low’ affecting the region.
According to data from the Met department, areas such as Gulistan-i-Johar (40.3°C) and Jinnah Terminal (40.2°C) were hotter than the rest of the city for the second consecutive day.
Met officials explained that a low-pressure area currently over western Rajasthan, India, is impacting the coastal city of Karachi and other parts of Sindh.
They referred to this as a “heat low,” a common weather feature in April, according to Dawn.
Dry weather prediction
The department’s data revealed that the weather system expanded on Saturday, affecting a larger portion of the province.
Temperatures reached 44°C in Mithi, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Dadu; 43°C in Chhor, Tandojam, and Hyderabad; 42°C in Sakrand, Mirpurkhas, Mohenjo Daro, and Thatta; and 41°C in Larkana, Sukkur, Rohri, Khairpur, and Badin.
Officials forecast hot to very hot and dry weather across most of the province until 8 April, when a westerly wave is expected to reach the country’s northern regions, easing the intensity of the heatwave, according to Dawn.
Maximum temperature
In Karachi, the maximum temperature is anticipated to range between 37°C and 39°C over the next two days.
The weather forecast for Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir predicts dry conditions in Srinagar, Jammu, Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian, and Baramula, while Leh is expected to remain cold and dry, according to ARY News.
