KAHULUI: The death toll from a horrific wildfire that destroyed a town in Hawaii has climbed to 89, the governor of the state said on Sunday.
According to AFP Josh Green told reporters that there are 89 fatalities so far but “It’s going to continue to rise. We want to brace people for that.”
The tragedy is seen as the deadliest disaster in the United States’ history. As per media reports, fresh evacuations are also underway in the region as fires creep closer to the area of Kaanapali.
Hawaii Wildfire Death Toll Climbs To 89: Governor
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency said over 2,200 structures have been damaged or destroyed in the fire. It estimated that it would cost around $5.5 billion to rebuild affected communities.
Hawaiian authorities have said they were launching an investigation into the handling of the fire.
Earlier, officials in the Hawaiian fire-hit county feared it could take years to repair the damage caused by a massive wildfire.

President Biden has already approved a major federal disaster declaration to make funding available for people, governments, and local businessmen affected by the wildfires.
Hawaii is also getting support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Guard.
