BEIRUT: The Palestinian fighter group Hamas said on Friday that a “commander” was killed in an Israeli attack on Lebanon’s eastern district near the Syrian border.
Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said in a statement that “commander” Sharhabil Sayed was killed “after being targeted by Israeli occupation aircraft” in Lebanon’s West Bekaa region.
A source close to the Palestinian militant group, speaking on condition of anonymity, previously said that Sayed was the Hamas official in charge of Lebanon’s Bekaa region and “was killed in an Israeli attack targeting his vehicle”.
Lebanon’s civil defence reported “one martyr and two wounded as a result of an Israeli airstrike” on a vehicle near Majdal Anjar, a town about five kilometers (three miles) from the Syrian border and about 60 kilometers from Lebanon’s border with Israel.
Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported one dead and two wounded in a “hostile strike” targeting a vehicle in the same area.

The attack came after Israeli strikes that day killed a Hezbollah fighter and two children, the Lebanese militant group and official media said.
Attacks are intensifying, with Israeli forces increasingly pushing deep into Lebanese territory, while Palestinian factions and other allied groups in Lebanon have also claimed cross-border attacks.
Hezbollah announced earlier this week that its chief, Hassan Nasrallah, met with senior Hamas member Khalil al-Hayya.
In March, Hamas said Israeli strike killed one of its members in south Lebanon that state media said killed three people.
