Haiti Leaders Agree to Form Transitional Council

PORT-AU-PRINCE: The leaders of Haiti have finalized a deal to establish a temporary government to end gang-fueled chaos, however, the details must be approved by the outgoing authorities.

Transition council members have already sent their plan to the regional Caribbean body CARICOM.

Under the agreement a nine-member council representing political parties, the private sector and civil society, will be established that will pave the way for presidential elections by early 2026.

According to the agreement seen by western media on Monday the mandate of the council will end on February 7, 2026.

The country’s new authorities will replace outgoing prime minister Ariel Henry, who already tendered his resignation on March 11 after Haiti dragged into deadly gang violence.

According to a political official the accord was sent to CARICOM, which has been instrumental in talks over the nation’s latest crisis.

The first task of the council’s will be to elect a new Prime minister will form a government with the cooperation of nine-member team, till the election.  Members of the council will not be allowed to contest the elections.

Haiti since 2016 has suffered political instability and crime.

The situation has further deteriorated when armed groups attacked police stations, prisons and government headquarters in February forcing shutdown of the port and airport.

With the airport in Port-au-Prince closed, the prime minister was not been able to return to the country as was on a trip to Kenya to seeking Nairobi’s support in leading an international security mission to Haiti sponsored by the United Nations.
