ISLAMABAD/CAP TOWN: South African police said that two gunmen opened fire on a group of citizens celebrating a birthday at the weekend in a township in South Africa, killing at least eight people and injuring three others.

Birthday Party

According to the AFP, police said that the owner of the home was celebrating his birthday when two unknown persons entered the premises Sunday evening in the port city of Gqeberha and started shooting at the guests.

Police said that the unknown persons “randomly shot at guests,” and “eight citizens died while three others are still fighting for their lives in hospital. The house owner is among the deceased”.

A police investigation has been launched into the attack and police said that the manhunt for the perpetrators was underway.

Shootings are common in South Africa, which has one of the international highest murder rates, fuelled by gang violence.

South Africa the previous year saw the string of shootings that killed nearly two dozen at separate bars in working-class suburbs in Johannesburg and the city of Pietermaritzburg.
