NEW YORK: In a promising show of regional cooperation, Gulf states and the United States have jointly expressed their commitment to diplomatic engagement and the prevention of regional escalation.

During a meeting on the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly, ministers from Saudi Arabia, the US, and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations issued a joint statement, highlighting their shared goals.

The joint statement welcomed the diplomatic engagement initiated by Saudi Arabia and other GCC states with Iran, underscoring the pursuit of regional de-escalation. It emphasized the vital importance of adherence to international law, particularly the UN Charter, as the foundation for peaceful relations among regional states.

One key focus of the ministers was ensuring the freedom of navigation and maritime security in the region. They expressed their determination to deter any illegal actions that might threaten shipping lanes, international trade, and vital oil installations in the GCC states, reinforcing the region’s commitment to stability and economic prosperity.

In a collective call for peace and security, the ministers urged Iran to cease the proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles and other dangerous weapons, recognizing the grave security threat they pose to the region.

A separate meeting involving the US, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE showcased a significant step towards conflict resolution. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken commended Saudi Arabia’s role in hosting a delegation from Sanaa in Riyadh. The discussions aim to chart a roadmap for ending the protracted conflict in Yemen through a Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices. The Kingdom’s commitment to providing $1.2 billion in economic support for the Yemeni government was applauded as a pivotal step towards alleviating the humanitarian crisis.

The ministers also emphasized their commitment to the Arab Peace Initiative, signalling their dedication to finding a comprehensive peace solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in accordance with the two-state solution.

Lastly, the ministers emphasized the importance of Iraq’s commitment to Kuwait’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the respect for international conventions and UN resolutions. This reaffirmed the significance of UNSC Resolution 833 regarding the demarcation of the Kuwait-Iraq boundary and the pursuit of peaceful relations among neighbouring states.

The joint statement reflects a significant stride towards regional stability, bolstered by diplomatic engagement and the shared commitment to international law and peace. It is a testament to the region’s determination to foster cooperation and ensure the well-being of its nations and peoples.
