Guinea-Bissau Gets New PM

BISSAU: Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo on Wednesday named Rui Duarte Barros as new prime minister of the African state.

According to a presidential decree, Geraldo Martins was sacked as prime minister just a week after his reappointment and Rui Duarte de Barros has been appointed as new prime minister.

Earlier, Embalo dissolved Guinea-Bissau’s parliament days after a foiled coup on December 1.

A presidential order said Geraldo Joao Martins is dismissed from his post as prime minister. The decree comes into force immediately.

Embalo talking to journalists during his swearing-in ceremony at the presidency said the relentless fight against corruption must be your team’s guiding thread.  He said that no one has the right to take public property.

All institutions must be audited: President

He added all institutions must be audited, starting with the accounts of the presidency.

Violence started in the capital Bissau between members of the national guard and special forces of the presidential guard on the night of November 30, killing two people.

Embalo while dissolving the parliament said that an attempted coup took place. He said the West African country has been plunged into crisis and fresh elections would be held.

He also announced to take over the interior and defense ministry portfolios.

Both Martins and Barros are members of the PAIGC party, that leads an opposition coalition that won June elections.
