ISLAMABAD: During the past three years, the Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP), conducted approximately 3,531 Square Kilometers (Sq-KMs) 3D and 9,628 Line Kilometers (L-KMs) 2D and seismic surveys to identify untapped hidden reserves of gas and oil in potential areas of the country.

Survey to help oil and gas companies

According to a senior official familiar with petroleum sector developments, the GSP has conducted surveys across the country, which have greatly aided oil and gas companies in launching exploration and production activities in high-potential areas.

He stated that geological experts conducted 2,880 L-KMs 2D surveys in 2019, 4,511 L-KMs in 2020, and 2,237 L-KMs in 2021 in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh.

Similarly, they conducted 1,917 Sq-KMs 3D seismic surveys in 2019, 716 in 2020, and 898 in 2021 across all four provinces.

The ratio of discovery of gas in Pakistan is one of the highest in the world, where one in eight wells hits a gas reservoir.
