ISLAMABAD: Green Pakistan Initiative (GPI) is transforming barren land into productive agricultural assets across the country, with one farmer reporting that 80 percent of completely uncultivated land allocated to him two years ago has now been brought under cultivation.
Asim Awan, owner of Mehnat Kash Naujawan Farm, told media that his farm is now producing wheat, chickpeas and canola on land that was completely unproductive just two years ago.

The success story represents a broader ambition to reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported wheat by expanding domestic cultivation onto land previously considered unusable.
Employment generation and livelihood improvement
The farm has emerged as a significant source of employment in the region, providing jobs to approximately seven hundred to eight hundred labourers during the crop season. Awan emphasised that the project has not just created jobs but has supported entire families connected to the farm.
“The impact extends beyond numbers. We’re not talking about 100 employees but 100 families connected to this project,” Awan explained, highlighting the broader social and economic benefits of the initiative.

National success story
Awan framed the project’s significance in national economic terms rather than as an individual achievement, arguing that produce from this land will reach Pakistani markets and help convert what are currently imports into future exports.
“This is not just an individual success, it is Pakistan’s success,” Awan stated. He expressed confidence that through this government initiative, no land in the country will remain barren in the future.
Technical support and modern farming
Awan revealed that GPI teams have provided continuous guidance and support since the land was allocated, including satellite-based monitoring of crops, seed varieties, and updates on emerging agricultural techniques from around the world.
This kind of sustained technical assistance addresses a gap that has often limited smallholder productivity in Pakistan, where access to modern agronomic data has traditionally been concentrated among larger commercial operations.

Broader initiative impact
The Green Pakistan Initiative, incorporated under Section 16 of the Companies Act, 2017, operates as a mission-driven corporate platform mandated to undertake modern agriculture, livestock, and afforestation projects in partnership with provincial governments, farmers, and investors.
Since 2023, GPI has facilitated the establishment of 60 large-scale corporate farms, contracting 188,627 acres and bringing over 116,000 acres under cultivation for the first time.
The initiative includes components such as dairy development, aquaculture, and the blue economy, all expected to have wide-ranging positive impacts across the country. Green Agri Malls and Smart Agri Farms have been established to provide farmers with access to modern agricultural facilities, including quality seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural machinery.
Government commitment
The initiative places strong emphasis on environmental protection by promoting effective utilisation of water and natural resources while laying the foundation for a sustainable, long-term green economy. Modern irrigation systems, hybrid seeds, and drone technology are being incorporated, enabling up to 80 percent water savings while strengthening food security.
