ATHENS, Greece: On Tuesday, the Greek coastguard rescued 75 migrants from a sailboat southwest of Pylos, a region notorious for one of the Mediterranean’s deadliest shipwrecks.
The migrants, whose nationalities and port of origin were not disclosed, are being taken to Kalamata. The rescue took place in an area where a tragic incident occurred in June 2023, when a dilapidated trawler from Tobruk, Libya, sank, claiming over 600 lives.
The vessel was severely overcrowded, and only 104 survivors were recovered. Criticism has been directed at the Greek coastguard, as survivors have filed complaints alleging slow response times despite alerts from EU border agency Frontex and NGO Alarm Phone.
