PARIS: Greece’s aspirations for a triumphant basketball World Cup have suffered a significant setback with the news that their star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, will be unable to participate in the tournament. Antetokounmpo’s absence comes as a result of knee surgery he underwent in July, rendering him unavailable for Greece’s preparations and competitions.

In a statement shared on social media, the 28-year-old Milwaukee Bucks sensation expressed his disappointment about being unable to contribute to his national team’s efforts. He conveyed his commitment to pushing his body to its limits to ensure peak performance, but medical evaluations have determined that he is not yet ready to compete at the required level for the World Cup.

Antetokounmpo, known for his exceptional prowess as a seven-foot-tall small forward, began his basketball journey with Filathlitikos before ascending to the NBA ranks with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013. Despite his current setback, he underscored his enduring passion and dedication to the Greek national team, expressing his eagerness to contribute to their quest to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris.

Greece’s Chances in World Cup

“Everyone knows my passion and love for my national team has and never will change,” Antetokounmpo stated, emphasizing his profound connection to representing Greece on the international stage. While unable to partake in the World Cup, he eagerly anticipates an opportunity to contribute in the forthcoming Olympic endeavor.

Greece’s absence from the World Cup is already being felt, as the team recently encountered defeats in their warm-up matches against Serbia (64-71) and Italy (70-74) within the Acropolis Tournament, a precursor to the main event.

The basketball World Cup is set to commence on August 25 across the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. Despite the loss of their star player, Greece, under the leadership of Dimitris Itoudis, will embark on their campaign against Jordan a day later in Group C, a competitive group that also includes the United States and New Zealand.
