BRUSSELS: Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has warned that there will be “grave consequences” if Niger’s military government allows deposed President Mohamed Bazoum’s health to worsen under house arrest, a European official stated Friday. During a call to EU chief Charles Michel, Bola Tinubu said Bazoum’s detention conditions are worsening.

Bazoum was arrested on July 26 by men of his presidential guard. The deposed President and his family are arrested in the presidential palace, AFP reported.

Michel “reiterated the EU’s complete support and supporting of ECOWAS’ decisions, as well as strong condemnation of the unacceptable military coup de force in the African country”. Michel further said that the EU would not recognize Niger’s military regime, adding Bazoum, democratically elected, remains the legitimate head of the African country.

Niger’s military regime on Tuesday said that it was open to dialogue to solve a regional problem caused by last month’s military coup, while Moscow and Washington called for a peaceful solution to the crisis. Democratic African governments and Western powers have called for the army rulers to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Bazoum, but the military regime has declined attempts at talks.
