ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Sunday said the incumbent government was actively taking concrete measures to promote media freedom under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who himself fully believed in freedom of expression.
The minister said in a news statement while felicitating the newly elected office-bearers of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), adding that freedom of expression and journalism are essential constitutional requirements for strengthening democracy.
She congratulated President CPNE Irshad Arif, Senior Vice President Anwar Sajdi, Secretary General Ejazul Haque, and other newly elected officials of CPNE.
CPNE’s Role in Media Freedom
Marriyum Aurangzeb appreciated the active role played by the CPNE in strengthening democracy and promoting press freedom in Pakistan.
She hoped that the newly elected office-bearers would utilize their experience, skills, and potential to lead the CPNE towards a new higher stature.
She added that the government would continue to assist CPNE and other media-related entities to resolve the issues faced by magazines and newspapers in the country, adding that the government believes a free press and freedom of expression guarantee a democratic nation.
