Government will Fulfill its Responsibility of Conducting General Elections: PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said that the federal government will fulfill its constitutional and legal obligations to hold the general elections of the National Assembly on time.

Talking to the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) delegation on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said that the previous government signed an agreement with the IMF. When they came to know in January and February that they were being removed by constitutional and legal means, they deviated from their agreement. It was not a private agreement but an agreement between the State of Pakistan and the IMF.

He said that the damage done by this deviation is in front of everyone. According to him, IMF has said that they will strictly follow and review the conditions of IMF imposed on Pakistan and accepted by the previous government.

He said that the biggest flood in the history of Pakistan occurred. The federal government spent 100 billion rupees for the flood victims through Benazir Income Support Program and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) with transparency.

He added that after the devastating earthquake in Turkiye and Syria, millions of homes were destroyed and millions displaced, and that the people of Pakistan are trying their best to help them.

Talking about general elections, he said timely elections are a constitutional and legal requirement, and the country will move forward. In this regard, the Federation is fulfilling its duty. It was decided to repeat the census in 2021 during the previous government’s tenure.
