ISLAMABAD: Google Pay, the globally recognised digital payment platform, has officially been launched in Pakistan, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital financial ecosystem.

The launch event, held on Wednesday, was attended by senior Google executives, with banks and fintech companies set to gradually introduce the service to their customers based on their readiness.

The platform allows Pakistani users to link their bank-issued debit and credit cards to Google Wallet, enabling seamless contactless payments.

According to industry experts, Google Pay’s entry into Pakistan is expected to accelerate the shift towards digital transactions in a country where cash-based payments still dominate.

The platform is designed to provide a secure and convenient method for users to send and receive money, offering full compatibility with local banks and financial institutions.

Google Wallet, first introduced in 2011, functions as a digital wallet that securely stores debit and credit card details, allowing users to make payments directly from their Android smartphones.

Beyond payments, the service also supports boarding passes, event tickets, and identification cards, aiming to replace the need for a traditional wallet.

To use Google Wallet, users must install the app from the Google Play Store, log in with their Google account, and add a payment method.

Once a credit or debit card is linked, users can make mobile payments at retail outlets accepting Google Pay.

The service also facilitates online and in-app purchases, further enhancing Pakistan’s digital payments landscape.

As per Google’s announcement, several major banks in Pakistan are already supporting Google Wallet, including Bank Alfalah, HBL, UBL, Meezan Bank, and JazzCash, among others.

The list is expected to expand in the coming months to include Allied Bank, JS Bank, and Easypaisa Digital Bank.

Google Wallet is also integrating with digital payment providers such as PayFast and Safepay, allowing users to shop at popular retailers like Onic, Gul Ahmed, Sana Safinaz, and J.

Furthermore, the platform supports airline boarding passes from carriers such as Batik Air and Thai Airways, providing real-time updates on flight schedules and gate changes.

The introduction of Google Pay in Pakistan is seen as a transformative step in the country’s financial sector.

By fostering collaboration between banks and fintech firms through open APIs, the platform is expected to drive innovation and encourage the adoption of digital payment solutions.
