LONDON: As eyelash extensions gain popularity for their ability to enhance the appearance of eyelashes, health experts have warned about the potential risks associated with their use. The glues used to attach these extensions can pose serious health hazards, from allergic reactions to potential long-term effects such as cancer.

Eyelash extensions, which are made from materials including silk, mink or horse hair, plastic, or nylon, are typically applied with a specialized adhesive. However, recent findings suggest that these glues can lead to a range of adverse health issues.

A recent study highlighted that approximately 40 percent of women using eyelash extensions have reported experiencing allergic reactions to the adhesive. Furthermore, over 60 percent of users have experienced keratoconjunctivitis, an inflammation affecting both the conjunctiva and cornea.

More concerning is the discovery that some eyelash extensions are being applied using nail glue instead of the intended eyelash adhesive. Nail glue is far more potent and poses severe risks to eye health. Reports indicate that this substitution can lead to severe irritation and long-term damage.

Furthermore, research has shown that a significant percentage of professional eyelash glues release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. A study found that 75 percent of the 20 professional-grade glues tested contained formaldehyde, and four out of 17 consumer-grade glues also had the chemical, sometimes without it being listed in the ingredients.

The preservatives in eyelash adhesives are also problematic, potentially leading to conjunctivitis and conjunctival erosion. This condition affects the epithelial cells on the cornea’s surface, causing them to loosen from the underlying layer, which can result in pain and vision issues.

Blepharitis, an inflammation or irritation of the eyelids caused by bacterial buildup, is another common issue associated with eyelash extensions. Poor hygiene practices at salons can exacerbate this condition and may lead to lash mite infestations. Additionally, the process of removing eyelash extensions, even when performed by professionals, can damage natural lashes and impair their health.

The rise of eyelash serums, which claim to enhance the thickness, length, and darkness of natural lashes, also presents health risks. Many of these serums contain prostaglandins, which can lead to adverse effects such as the loss of fat tissue around the eyes, making the area appear hollow and exacerbating dark circles. There is also a risk of permanent changes in iris color due to these serums.
