ROME: Thousands of computer servers were under attack by a global ransomware, Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) has warned.

The massive hacking attack seeks to exploit a software vulnerability, the agency’s director general Roberto Baldoni informed Reuters.

Reportedly, the ransomware was targeting VMware (VMW.N) ESXi servers, used to monitor virtual machines.

A spokesperson for VMware said the software company is aware of the report and that it issued patches two years ago after it discovered the vulnerability that is being exploited at the moment. He urged customers to apply the patch in case they have not done so.

Servers also compromised in other European countries, America

Servers had also been compromised in other European countries, including France and Finland, as well as in the United States and Canada, Italy’s ANSA news agency reported citing the ACN.

Dozens of organisations in Italy were likely to have been affected by the cyber attack and many others had been warned to take action to protect their systems.

Cybersecurity officials in the US said they were evaluating the effects of the reported incidents as well as providing assistance where required.
