Global Outcry Mounts Over Killing of Aid Workers in Gaza by Israeli Airstrikes

GAZA: The international community has united in condemnation following the killing of seven aid workers by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, calling for an urgent investigation into the tragic incident.

Among the victims were foreign nationals and Palestinian workers affiliated with World Central Kitchen, an organization dedicated to providing food assistance to the people of Gaza. UN Secretary-General António Guterres denounced the attack, stating that the loss of the aid workers brings the total number of humanitarian staff killed in Gaza to a staggering 196, with over 175 of them being UN personnel. Guterres termed the killings “unconscionable,” highlighting the gravity of the situation.

The European Union also expressed condemnation over the recent airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus on April 1, which seven persons, including two Iranian generals and five military advisers. While Iran attributed the attack to Israel, the Israeli government has yet to claim responsibility. Peter Stano, a spokesperson for the executive European Commission, emphasized the importance of upholding the inviolability of diplomatic premises and personnel in accordance with international law.

Israel ‘Intentionally Killed’ Aid Workers: UN Expert

José Andrés, the founder of World Central Kitchen, penned an op-ed expressing his outrage over the attack on his organization’s convoy in Gaza, condemning it as a deliberate assault on humanitarian efforts. Andrés called on the Israeli government to cease its military actions, open access to vital resources such as food and medicine, and commit to a path of peace.

The World Food Programme (WFP) also raised alarm over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, with malnutrition among children reaching alarming levels. The organization called for a ceasefire to ensure access to essential supplies and prevent the onset of famine.

Meanwhile, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese voiced suspicion that the killings of the aid workers were deliberate, aimed at intimidating donors and perpetuating the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. Albanese accused Israel of orchestrating the attacks to undermine humanitarian efforts and maintain control over the region.
