LONDON: Global law enforcement agencies have seized a dark web marketplace popular with cybercriminals, as per a notice posted to the website on Tuesday.

A banner across Genesis Market’s website said the FBI had seized domains belonging to the organization. Logos of Canadian, European, and Australian police organizations were plastered across the site as well as that of cybersecurity company Qintel, according to a report by Reuters.

Both FBI and Qintel are yet to respond to comment requests.

The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency – whose logo was also on the website – in a confirmatory message, said it was taking part in a global law enforcement operation focusing on cyber criminals without offering any further comment ahead.

Reuters could not locate the contact details for the administrators of Genesis Market.

The FBI was also seeking information about the people behind the marketplace and, in its seizure notice, requested anyone in touch with them should “email us (FBI), we’re interested.”

Genesis specialized in the sale of digital products, especially “browser fingerprints” that were harvested from malicious software infected computers, said British cybersecurity firm Searchlight Cyber’s analyst Louise Ferrett.

As the fingerprints many a times include cookies, internet protocol addresses, credentials, and other browser or operating system information, they can be used by cybercriminals to bypass anti-fraud solutions like device fingerprinting or multi-factor authentication, she said.

The website had been active since 2018.
