BERLIN: Germany’s parliament has rejected a new call by the opposition for the government to provide Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Kyiv, a day after the country’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz defended his denial to supply the arms.
The main opposition alliance has sought to maintain pressure on the issue and also exploit divisions in Scholz’s three-party coalition, even as he tries to put a cover on the discussion. Earlie, German Chancellor told legislators that far-sightedness is a virtue and rejected recommendations that he doesn’t trust Ukraine.
Ukraine and Germany
Parliament’s lower house rejected the opposition Union alliance’s motion by 495 votes to 190, with 5 abstentions. Germany has become the second-largest supplier of defense help to Kyiv after Washington, but Scholz has delayed for months on Ukraine’s demand for Taurus missiles. His stance has frustrated the conservative opposition and parts of Scholz’s own alliance.
Earlier, legislators asked the government to deliver long-range weapons to Kyiv but rejected opposition call urging it to provide Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
However, critics did not accept Scholz’s stance that Taurus missiles could only be utilized responsibly with the involvement of German forces, whether outside or inside Ukraine.
