BERLIN: Germany has called on all parties to the Middle East conflict, especially Iran, to prevent an escalation after a rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights killed 12 persons last week.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson said during a regular press conference on Monday said Berlin assumes with certainty that the attack on a football ground in the Golan Heights was carried out by Lebanon-based Hezbollah.
He added recent acts by the Yemen-based Houthi militia, had also significantly contributed to instability in the region in recent weeks.
The strike over the weekend has raised fears of a broader conflict in the region, where tensions have increased due to Israel’s ongoing bombardment campaign in Gaza, which started more than nine months ago.
Foreign Minister of Germany Annalena Baerbock has talked to several people including her Lebanese counterpart in an attempt to mitigate the situation and prevent it from escalating.
The spokesperson advised the German citizens in Lebanon, which are estimated to be about 1,300 to leave the country. “We are very concerned about the situation of the Germans on the ground and are preparing what needs to be prepared,” he added.
