BERLIN: Germany’s ministry of foreign affairs mocked U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s false statement about immigrants eating pets in a post on X on Wednesday.

Trump also amplified a false claim in Tuesday’s debate with Kamala Harris numerous Haitian immigrants in Ohio, were stealing locals’ pets or taking wildlife from parks for food. He also assaulted Harris’ bid to move the US towards what she says will be a more diverse and sustainable mix of energy sources, saying Berlin had made attempt and failed to give up fossil fuels.

” Germany’s energy system is completely operational, with over 50% renewables. And we are shutting down – not building – coal and nuclear plants. Coal will be off the grid by 2038 at the latest,” the foreign ministry stated in a post on social media.

“PS: We also don’t eat dogs and cats. #Debate2024”. The ministry of economy retweeted the social media post, adding: “New coal-fired power plants? No way!”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has not directly endorsed Kamila Harris but lauded her in July as a “competent and experienced politician” and who could well win the elections in the US. Germany was a frequent focus of Donald Trump’s rage during his 2017-21 term as president due to its trade surplus with the US and low spending on defence.

Trump pledges to impose higher tariffs on imports if elected and to condition Washington’s support for members of the NATO on them spending the agreed 2 percent of GDP on defence. German authorities have said they expect to meet the 2 percent target this year.
