BERLIN: Germany has decided to close all three Iranian consulates in the country but allow the embassy to remain functioning in reaction to the execution of a German-Iranian citizen, the foreign ministry said on Thursday.
“Our diplomatic relations are already more than at a low point,” said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
Iran has consulates in the German cities of Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich. Germany has already recalled its envy of Iran over Jamshid Sharmahd’s execution and summoned the Iranian charge d’affaires to express its protest.
“Further Germans are also being unfairly held. We are also deeply committed to them and continue to work tirelessly for their release,” she said.
The minister also urged the European Union to include Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on its list of terrorist groups. Sharmahd, 69, was executed in Iran on Monday on terrorism charges, the Iranian judiciary said.
