ISLAMABAD/ WARSAW: Germany has formally rejected the World War-II reparations claim estimated to be 1.3 trillion euros, the Polish foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
Since coming to power in 2015, the Polish governing Law and Justice (PIS) party championed the subject and evoked Germany’s “moral duty”. Poland, in September 2022, estimated the financial cost of World War-II losses to be 1.3 trillion euros and sent the formal diplomatic note to Berlin demanding compensation.
Germany repeatedly rejected demand
Germany has repeatedly rejected the demand and said that Poland officially renounced such demands in a 1953 accord. “According to the German government, the matter of reparations and compensation the wartime losses remain closed, and it has no plan to enter into negotiations,” the Poland foreign ministry said in a statement.
The foreign ministry of Germany has confirmed that it has responded to a verbal note from the Poland government dated October 3 but did not give any further details. Foreign Minister of Germany Annalena Baerbock had rejected a demand during a visit to Warsaw in October, stating the issue was, for Berlin, to a closed chapter.
The foreign ministry of Poland said, meanwhile, it could further continue to seek compensation for German aggression and occupation in 1939-1945. Warsaw said Tuesday it has called on the United Nations (UN) for support in its efforts to receive war reparations. Poland conservatives argue their country forced to sign the 1953 accord by the Soviet Union.
