German Vice Chancellor Accuses Israel of Flouting International Law

BERLIN: German Vice Chancellor and Minister for Economic Affairs, Robert Habeck on Sunday strongly condemned Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip saying they are an open violation of international law.

He made the remarks while Speaking at the “Democracy Festival” in Berlin, which celebrated the 75th anniversary of the German Constitution.

On the occasion, Habeck addressed the concerns of the public about Germany’s military support to Israel.

During a Question Answer session, Habeck said that Germany has clearly stated its opposition to the Israeli attack on Rafah, stressing that such actions should not have occurred.

He asked Israel to adhere to international law, pointing out the severe impacts of the Israeli actions on the Palestinian population.

Habeck also added that the war in Gaza could potentially end if Hamas ceases its military actions.

Meanwhile, European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has criticized the Israeli occupation authorities for their punitive actions against the Palestinian Authority, voicing concern over the impact on the Palestinian people.

According to the Gaza health ministry at least 35,984 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and 80,643 injured in Israel’s military offensive on Gaza since October 7.

The past 24 hours alone saw 58 Palestinian fatalities across Gaza, including the tragic deaths of six persons from the same family in Rafah.
