BERLIN: German police have detained two Afghan citizens accused of planning to carry out an attack near the Swedish parliament, federal prosecutors said on Tuesday.

The suspects, identified only as Afghan citizens Ibrahim M.G. and Ramin N., were apprehended in the eastern city of Gera, according to a statement from the federal prosecutor’s office. The accused were referred to only by their first names and initials in compliance with German privacy laws.

Prosecutors stated that the Daesh group’s affiliate in Afghanistan had assigned the suspects in mid-2023 with the task of executing an attack in Europe.

Allegedly, the two had made preparations to target police and other individuals near the parliament in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, “in close coordination” with Daesh members. This included conducting online research on the location and attempting, unsuccessfully, to obtain weapons.

Prosecutors revealed that Ibrahim M.G. had joined the Daesh affiliate in August 2023. Together with Ramin N., he had reportedly collected 2,000 euros ($2,170) in donations for the Daesh group to aid a member imprisoned in northern Syria.

The Afghan suspects are being investigated for various crimes, including providing support to a terrorist organization, conspiracy to commit a crime, and violations against trade laws.
