BERLIN: German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has called for urgent action in Europe to enhance its defense capabilities, citing the potential emergence of new military threats by the end of the decade.
Pistorius emphasized the need for European nations to strengthen their ability to defend themselves, especially in light of a shifting focus in the United States toward the Indo-Pacific region.
Speaking to Welt am Sonntag, Pistorius highlighted Russia’s significant increase in weapons production, which is fueling its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. He also underscored Russia’s threats to the Baltic states, Georgia, and Moldova. The evolving security landscape necessitates proactive measures by European nations to ensure the safety of their continent.
“We Europeans must engage more to ensure security on our own continent,” stated Pistorius. However, he acknowledged that the process of boosting Europe’s defense capabilities, including weapons production, would take time.
