ISLAMABAD: The Ambassador of Germany, Alfred Grannas, has emphasized that women empowerment is a challenging but crucial issue in Pakistan.

Speaking to the Diplomatic News Agency (DNA), Ambassador Grannas highlighted the efforts of German non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in supporting women’s socio-economic development and reducing gender violence in the country.

Ambassador Grannas expressed satisfaction with the growing interest of German companies in the Pakistani market, leading to the decision to extend the German network of chambers of commerce and industry abroad (AHK) to Pakistan. This move is expected to significantly enhance bilateral trade and serve as a game changer for future economic interactions between the two countries.

He further mentioned the establishment of a “Pakistan Desk” at the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Dubai, aiming to establish a physical representation in Pakistan in the near future. This development has sparked increased interest in delegations traveling to Pakistan to explore business opportunities.

However, Ambassador Grannas acknowledged that the current economic conditions and import restrictions pose significant challenges for businesses in Pakistan. He advised interested German companies to closely monitor the situation and consider investing in Pakistan once improvements in structural reforms and the removal of restrictions are witnessed, which would encourage investment and economic cooperation.

German NGOs working in Pakistan

Regarding German NGOs working in Pakistan, Ambassador Grannas highlighted the active involvement of organizations such as Kindernothilfe, Welthungerhilfe, and the German Red Cross in various development projects and programs.

These NGOs have played a vital role in emergency response, rehabilitation, and economic development, particularly during recent floods. They also prioritize women’s empowerment by creating better opportunities and addressing gender violence across different sectors.

The ambassador emphasized that achieving women empowerment in Pakistan requires collective participation and mutual understanding. German NGOs, in collaboration with local and national NGOs, are working towards increasing women’s participation in economic, political, and social spheres to create a more equitable and prosperous society in Pakistan.

Ambassador Grannas also highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy in fostering people-to-people connections. Germany supports academic exchange programs through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which sends many students from Pakistan to Germany for higher studies.

Additionally, German language courses are offered through cultural centers in Karachi and Lahore, promoting cultural exchange. Germany has also supported events such as the Women’s Film Festival, the Lahore Literary Festival, and the Lahore Digital Arts Festival to celebrate the achievements and creativity of Pakistani artists and writers.

Reflecting on his experiences in Pakistan, Ambassador Grannas expressed his admiration for the country’s vibrant cities, diverse cultures, and warm hospitality of the Pakistani people. He considers it a privilege to witness and receive support and love from everyone he meets during his tenure as the German ambassador to Pakistan.
