ISLAMABAD: In recognition of his outstanding contributions to peace and security, former Army Chief of Pakistan and current Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), General (Retd) Raheel Sharif, was presented with a prestigious lifetime achievement award.
The accolade was bestowed upon him by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi of Government College University Lahore, where General (Retd) Sharif shared his insights with students, emphasizing the significance of character, courage, and competence in life.
During the award ceremony, Prof Zaidi lauded General (Retd) Sharif’s exceptional achievements and expressed pride in his status as an alumnus of Government College University Lahore, a testament to his dedication and accomplishments.
Reflecting on his own journey, General (Retd) Sharif highlighted the legacy of his family at GCU, as well as the profound influence of his elder brother, Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider, Military), a fearless soldier who epitomized courage and sacrifice.
General (Retd) Raheel Sharif’s Role in Combating Terrorism
The event underscored General (Retd) Sharif’s pivotal role in combatting terrorism within Pakistan and his leadership as the inaugural military commander of the IMCTC, which unites 42 nations in the pursuit of global peace and security.
General (Retd) Sharif, Pakistan’s 9th Chief of Army Staff (COAS), held this esteemed position from 2013 to 2016. His tenure was marked by significant anti-terrorism operations that played a crucial role in eradicating terrorism across the nation. Notably, Operation Zarb-e-Azb in North Waziristan stands as a landmark effort that dismantled Taliban strongholds, leading to enhanced stability throughout the country.
Following his retirement, General (Retd) Sharif assumed leadership of the multinational alliance, IMCTC, at its inception in 2017, continuing his steadfast commitment to international peace and security.
