ISLAMABAD: To end the ongoing uncertainty about the upcoming general elections, sources disclosed that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has initiated its preparatory work to hold the polls in the last week of January next year.
According to the sources, the officials in the Election Commission of Pakistan have prepared a tentative schedule for the polling exercise and have suggested possible dates between January 27 and 30 for polling.
However, the final dates for the general election would be released after the approval of the ECP, the sources further disclosed.
Last day, the ECP reportedly contacted the caretaker governments of all the provinces for consultation over the dates for the general elections, to which the provincial governments conveyed to the ECP to hold the elections between February 11 and 25.
Earlier, there were reports in the media that the election would be held in the last week of February. Meanwhile, PPP and JUI-F have already demanded the election commission to hold polls within 90 days under Article 224 of the Constitution.
After a meeting with the ECP, PPP leader Nayyar Bukhari said they wanted the commission to announce a date for elections.
Delay in General Election
However, some experts believe that if the caretaker government manage to address the ongoing economic unrest in the country, there would be a possible delay in the general election.
In addition, in a statement the previous day, ECP remarked that the commission would try to complete the delimitation of constituencies by November this year. However, it is still not obvious that the delimitation process will be completed on time.
