NEW YORK: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has lamented over the failure of the UN Security Council to vote in support of a resolution seeking a ceasefire in Gaza and the protection of civilians, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Tuesday.

GCC spokeswoman and Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Alya Ahmed Saif Al Thani, said that the GCC states express their regret that the Security Council did not approve the draft resolution submitted by Algeria and backed by the Arab group and the majority of the council members.

She termed the draft resolution was humanitarian in content and consistent with international humanitarian law.

Al Thani said that GCC countries will continue their efforts along with partners to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to save the blood of Palestinian brothers and to ensure the arrival of more humanitarian and relief assistance to the strip and to protect civilians.

The draft resolution rejected the forced displacement of the Palestinian civilian population while reiterating the demand that all parties comply with their obligations under international law, and sought an immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
