RIYADH: Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jasem Albudaiwi, has strongly condemned the continued Iranian attacks on GCC member states.

He highlighted deliberate strikes on critical infrastructure and oil facilities as blatant violations of international law, posing a direct threat to both regional security and global energy stability, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Sunday.

Albudaiwi said the persistent attacks reflect an escalatory approach by the Iranian government toward the GCC states. He described the actions as unacceptable acts of aggression that undermine de-escalation efforts and endanger both regional and international security.

The GCC Secretary-General reaffirmed that member states reserve their full legal rights under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and international law to take all necessary measures to protect their security, safeguard resources, and respond to aggression.

He called on the international community to condemn the attacks, adopt a firm and deterrent stance, and ensure Iran complies immediately with UN Security Council Resolution 2817 to halt violations and preserve regional stability.

Albudaiwi concluded by emphasising the unity and solidarity of the GCC states in defending their security and interests, reiterating their commitment to coordinated actions aimed at enhancing regional stability and achieving lasting peace for their peoples.

It is pertinent to mention that More than 20 countries on Saturday expressed their willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring safe passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, strongly condemning Iran’s closure of the crucial waterway.

The joint statement by the coalition of nations comes amid growing concerns over disruptions to global shipping and energy supplies caused by rising regional tensions.

“We condemn in the strongest terms recent attacks by Iran on unarmed commercial vessels in the Gulf, attacks on civilian infrastructure including oil and gas installations, and the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces,” said the 22 countries, mostly European but also including the UAE and Bahrain.
