KARACHI: The Pakistan men’s cricket team received a significant boost with the arrival of their new white-ball head coach, Gary Kirsten, ahead of their four-match T20I series against England in Leeds. Kirsten’s appointment is strategic, aiming to enhance Pakistan’s preparations and performance not only for the upcoming series but also for the impending World Cup.
Upon joining the team in Leeds, Kirsten was warmly welcomed by the team management and captain Babar Azam. A symbolic gesture marked the occasion as senior manager Wahab Riaz presented Kirsten with the team’s training shirt, symbolizing the beginning of his tenure.
The team commenced rigorous practice sessions at Headingley, Leeds, with training scheduled from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM local time on May 20. The final training session before the first T20I is set for Tuesday, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. This preparation is crucial as the first T20I between Pakistan and England is scheduled for May 22 at Headingley.
This T20I series holds paramount importance for both teams as it serves as a prelude to the World Cup, which begins just two days after the series concludes. The tournament, set in the United States, adds an extra layer of excitement and international exposure.
In the World Cup, Pakistan finds itself in Group A, pitted against arch-rivals India, along with Ireland, Canada, and the USA. Conversely, England will compete in Group B, facing formidable opponents like Australia, Namibia, Scotland, and Oman.
