Ganga Ram’s Legacy is all about compassion: Kesha Ram

LAHORE: Kesha Ram Hinsdale on Friday said that Sir Ganga Ram passed on a matchless legacy to the generations to come and it is all about kindness.

Ganga Ram’s Legacy

She visited the family home constructed by Sir Ganga Ram in 1928 at Gulberg Lahore. The family of Sir Ganga Ram lived in the house till partition of Hindustan, according to APP.

Sir Ganga Ram died in 1927 in England and could come back to his home as the house was completed by 1928.  Sir Ganga Ram (1851-1927) was an architect and philanthropist, who is regarded as the ‘father of modern Lahore’. On the occasion of her visit, Kesha Ram Hinsdale said that she has heard stories about the house. 

She said that this was the only place she heard stories about as her ‘Dadi jee’ would talk of kitchen, the verandah and the swimming pool.  She said, ” I felt that I knew the house already as I saw the home through my mental window several times.

She said that her grandmother never stopped talking about this beautiful place. She thought that the present owner of the house for preserving the place in its original magnificence.

Sir Ganga Ram’s Contributions

She said that Sir Ganga Ram contributed to empower the rural population especially women in the city. She lauded the great city of Lahore and its people.

“Anytime there was a conflict and somebody wanted to take his name off the building, someone would stand up and say ‘this man is too great, his generosity is too large and his heart is heart of Lahore’,” she said, adding that such men believed it was unfair to remove Ganga Ram’s name because it will tantamount to erasing the history of collaboration and partnership.

She appreciated the hospitality and generosity of people and said it would make her and husband Jacob come back frequently. She thanked office-bearers of an NGO ‘Lahore Sangat’ and Chief Executive Officer Feroz Sons Osman Khalid Waheed, while she was being shown around the folk-lorish ancestral home.
