LIBREVILLE: The junta-appointed prime minister Raymond Ndong Sima was quoted as saying on Sunday that a 24-month transition to elections in Gabon would be “reasonable” following the country’s last month’s coup.
On 30 August, army officers took over and dissolved the election, which they deemed invalid after the results were announced.
Bongo has been in power since 2009, succeeding his father Omar Bongo, who ruled for 42 years.
Although it has pledged to oversee free and fair elections, the junta has not provided a schedule for their holding.
Ndong Sima provided the following initial thoughts on the potential duration of this changeover to AFP: “It is good to start with a reasonable goal by saying: ‘We hope to see the process completed within 24 months so that we can return to elections.”
