MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Saturday that the announcements made by G7 leaders during their summit over the weekend, aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, demonstrated a determination to “contain” both Russia and China.

Speaking in a televised meeting, Lavrov highlighted the decisions discussed and taken at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, which he believes are targeted at limiting the influence of Russia and China. He suggested that these decisions indicate a concerted effort by G7 nations to curb the political and economic influence of both countries.

The G7 summit, held in Hiroshima, Japan, brought together world leaders from the group’s member countries along with the European Union. Additionally, several significant Asia-Pacific nations, including India, Indonesia, South Korea, Vietnam, and Australia, participated in the summit.

G7 primarily focusses on Ukraine conflict

The discussions in Hiroshima primarily focused on addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the increasing dominance of China on the global stage, and the concerning situation related to Taiwan. These topics are intricately linked to supply chain issues, economic security, and energy security.

The presence of India, as the chair of the G-20 this year, has also brought attention to the concerns and perspectives of the Global South or the developing world.

The G7 leaders’ decisions and discussions reflect a collective effort to address geopolitical challenges posed by Russia and China, as well as to explore strategies for maintaining stability in the region.

The containment approach discussed by Lavrov suggests a growing tension between these global powers and the G7 nations, as they navigate complex political and economic dynamics in an increasingly interconnected world.
