HIROSHIMA: G7 leaders have emphasized the need for an urgent assessment of the impact of generative artificial intelligence and announced plans to launch discussions on the “responsible” use of the technology.
A working group will be established to address various issues related to generative AI, including copyright concerns and disinformation, according to the final communique released during the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan.
Generative AI technologies, such as text generation tools like ChatGPT, image creators, and AI-composed music, have garnered both admiration and controversy. Creators have accused these technologies of using material without permission, leading to legal battles.
Governments worldwide are facing pressure to swiftly mitigate the associated risks, with the CEO of OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, emphasizing the importance of AI regulation during a recent hearing with US lawmakers.
G7 acknowledges growing prominence of generative AI
The G7 statement acknowledged the growing prominence of generative AI across different countries and sectors. It called for relevant ministers to establish the Hiroshima AI process through a G7 working group, aiming to conduct inclusive discussions on generative AI by the end of the year.
The topics to be addressed include governance, intellectual property rights, transparency promotion, response to foreign information manipulation (including disinformation), and responsible utilization of these technologies.
The working group will collaborate with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), international organizations focused on AI governance.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before a US Senate panel, stressing the need for regulatory intervention to mitigate the risks associated with powerful AI models. European Parliament lawmakers have also taken initial steps toward EU-wide regulation of AI systems, including ChatGPT.
The G7 highlighted the importance of updating international governance frameworks for digital technologies, including AI and emerging technologies like immersive metaverses, in line with shared democratic values. These values encompass fairness, privacy protection, and safeguarding against online harassment, hate, and abuse.
