NAPLES, Italy: G7 defence ministers convened in Naples, Italy, to address pressing global security concerns, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

This meeting, the first focused on defence under Italy’s G7 presidency, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to providing unwavering support to Ukraine, which is entering its third winter amid the conflict with Russia.

The G7 ministers, representing Italy, France, Germany, the UK, Japan, Canada, and the US, emphasized their intent to continue military assistance to Ukraine. The meeting came at a critical time, as recent military developments in Lebanon, including strikes against UN peacekeepers, raised alarms about the potential for further regional escalation. The ministers expressed concerns about the involvement of Iran in supporting groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto highlighted the deteriorating global security situation, which includes instability in sub-Saharan Africa and increasing tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.

The gathering also included discussions on enhancing the mandate of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon to ensure their protection amid recent attacks, with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell advocating for a more robust presence.

As the G7 countries prepare to face these complex challenges, they remain focused on fostering collaboration and ensuring stability in both Europe and the Middle East. This commitment reflects a broader strategy to address the multifaceted security threats that continue to shape the geopolitical landscape.
