WASHINGTON: For the first time, the top seven democracies in the world jointly rejected the idea of recognising North Korea as a nuclear state.
In a statement released by the G-7, the group, using North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, wrote: “In accordance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) or any other special status, the DPRK cannot and will never hold the status of a nuclear-weapon State.”
Even though the Biden administration hasn’t shown any evidence of doing so, academics are beginning to question whether the United States should acknowledge North Korea as a nuclear power.
Professor of Chinese studies at Yonsei University in South Korea JOHN DELURY tweeted, “Stubborn insistence, the language of ‘cannot and will never have special status’, appears unproductive.
