ISLAMABAD/JOHANNESBURG: At least 10 people were killed and 40 others wounded when a fuel tanker exploded in Boksburg, South Africa, rescue officials said on Sunday.
The incident happened when the tanker got stuck in a subway, and due to friction, it caught fire, emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi said. He said that they received a call that a tanker was stuck near a bridge. He said that firefighters were called to extinguish the fire but the tanker exploded, according to AFP.
Six firefighters injured: Officials
William Ntladi said that driver was also injured in the explosion. He feared that the death toll had risen as fifteen injured are in critical condition. He said that six firefighters also sustained minor injuries while extinguishing the fire. The truck was carrying gas, which is used especially for domestic purposes, and had come from the southeast part of South Africa. Eye witness Jean Marie Booysen said that today is a very sad day in their little suburb. Jean Marie Booysen said that she went upstairs to have her cup of tea and saw immense flames.
