PARIS: President Emmanuel Macron has announced that a French soldier has been killed in a road accident in Iraq while taking part in a training mission for the Iraqi armed forces, AFP reported on Friday.
France’s armed forces ministry said Sergeant Baptiste Gauchot got serious injuries when his car went off the road.
French Soldier Dies in Iraq Road Accident
He received initial treatment at Arbil hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Another soldier who was with him in the car at the time of accident is being treated in a Baghdad military hospital.
The French president expressed deep sorrow over the death of Sergeant Baptiste Gauchot in Iraq who belonged to the 19th Engineer Regiment.
In a statement, Macron reaffirmed his support for the people and the government of Iraq and France’s determination to continue working alongside them to train their security forces in the fight against terrorism.
In January this year, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in Paris and signed strategic agreements.
